* Mens et ManusMens et Manus

Mens et Manus: Folded Paper of MIT is an introduction to the work of MIT students, alumni, and faculty who have made the school a hub for a stimulating community of artists in folded paper. The exhibit opens Saturday, Feb 4th at Fuller Craft Museum, 455 Oak St. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paper folding—or origami as it is also popularly known—is the practice of transforming paper into complex representational and abstract three-dimensional sculpture through a series of complex folds. For these artists, folded paper serves as the nexus between mathematical and aesthetic inquiry, uniting mind and hand, mens et manus. The exhibit will run through April 29th.

The Brockton Public Library book club meets monthly during the school year. This month's meeting will be Saturday, Feb. 4th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Main Library, 304 Main St. Led by Lucia Shannon, the group discusses works written by authors from all over the globe. The February choice is "My Jim" by Nancy Rawls. The group makes selections each month, alternating male and female authors, and deliberately choosing authors from different continents. New members are always welcome. Members get to suggest titles for the group. Refreshments are always served and often relate to the book's setting. Free calendars highlighting black inventors will be distributed while supplies last. Indaba Theatre of New England will perform monologues based on these historical inventors from 12 to 1 p.m. Throughout the day, Indaba Theatre will also present living statues representing black inventors. Come make an African Wrap Doll or paper figure with Doll E. Daze Project & Museum Inc. Historical tours of the library will be conducted including a stop at our famous Liberty Tree. Good Samaritan Medical Center will introduce a new service line this month: the Good Samaritan Center for Weight Control. The first information session will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. at the medical center's Moakley Conference Room, 235 N. Pearl St. For the convenience of patients, this program will be locally-based in Brockton but clinically affiliated with St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center – an accredited Level 1 Bariatric Center by the American College of Surgeons. Dan Dailey: Working Method is a retrospective exhibition with a particular focus on the various methods and techniques employed by glass artist Dan Dailey over his 40-year career. The exhibit opens Saturday, Feb. 18th at Fuller Craft Museum, 455 Oak St. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dailey, the first graduate student of Dale Chihuly, has pursued his own unique voice in glass, from his singular work in antique Vitrolite sheet glass to complex constructions of blown glass and metal. This exhibition endeavors to pull back the curtain on the incredible choreography of technique and vision that make contemporary glass one of the most demanding, exciting, and unparalleled art forms today. The exhibition runs through June 3rd.

The Boys & Girls Club of Brockton is inviting you to join us and participate in the state-wide Youth Jobs Rally during school vacation on Thursday, February 23rd! We have participated in many events but none better than this civic engagement opportunity. In short, the Rally is a combined effort of teenagers and adults to advocate for state youth jobs funding. Last year, 1,100 teenagers and adults from across the state marched to the State House, held a rally inside and met with legislators to share the importance funding has personally and within the community. We took a bus full of teenagers to last year’s Rally. There were seven agencies represented. This year, we are asking you to provide the teenagers you serve an opportunity to advocate for something important to them: Employment. Here are some details about the event: •We will meet at the Boys & Girls Club of Brockton at 10:00 a.m. on February 23rd for a pre-Rally rally •We will depart the Club and descend on Boston.
