Brockton Receives Funding to Support Youth Violence Prevention
The Patrick-Murray Administration will be funding the City with $442,000 as part of the Safe and Successful Youth Initiative created to reduce homicides and serious assaults among Massachusetts Youth. This grant will help the City to reengage youth through the expansion of currently existing programs, as well as the implementation of several new programs. Brockton will be able to expand Operation Divinity, which is a current collaboration between police, social workers and clergy to support at-risk youth and their families. YouthBuild Brockton will also receive funds for additional support in bringing work skills , GED training and college access to high school dropouts. Some new additions under this grant will include adding a GED program for youth who are part of the Project Safe Corners Street Outreach program, and a father training program that is modeled after the “Fathers Now” program in Newark, New Jersey. There will also be an initiative that will provide families of violent crime victims with professional support from social workers and homicide bereavement specialists.
Funds were also distributed to 10 other urban communities in the Commonwealth. The Patrick Administration is hopeful that this additional support will help curb violence and bring us closer to ending the cycle of violence.
