2011 Mayor’s Youth Summit

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 11th Annual Mayor’s Youth Summit on April 2nd, 2011!
Every year, the youth of Brockton come together to discuss their concerns and issues they are dealing with in their community. This year, our young people showed that they have a vested interest in expanding the positive opportunities available to them in Brockton. Their suggestions were thoughtful and eloquent and we were proud to see their hard work. Their ideas and suggestions were presented to a panel which included the honorable Mayor Linda M. Balzotti, Superintendent Matthew Malone and BHS Principal Susan Szachowitz. The youth input will surely impact these leaders’ decisions throughout the upcoming year.
This year’s summit also featured Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick as a Keynote Speaker! We were honored and thrilled that Governor Patrick took time out of his busy schedule to come hear about the concerns that are on the minds of Brockton youth!
Another favorite staple at the event is the Youth Summit Talent Show, which was one of our most competitive yet! In the end, it was Sony Thoyo who won over the judges with his drumming and beatboxing skills. In addition to this, the Summit included an improv act with ImprovBoston, a monologue on gang violence presented by Higher Heights Productions and a performance by the previous talent show champions, Exit 18.
If you haven’t seen the video that our talented Brockton High students made to invite the Boston Celtics to the Summit, check it out here! Even though the Celtics weren’t able to make it, they sent lots of swag and prizes for the youth to take home!
